One of the most rewarding experiences one can ever have is travelling to Masai Mara, Kenya with your children. The vast wild spaces hold endless adventures for young children and adults alike and are, more often than not, inspiring places to celebrate special family moments. We even suggest a multigenerational safari holiday.

Imagine a few days without Ipads, TV, and thankfully no baby shark tunes! You trade all these with some quality time chatting, laughing with your loved ones, having your meals under a shade overlooking the dotted wildlife plains, embarking on thrilling game drives to discover the different wildlife species that thrive in the world most renowned national park and getting to know the country’s warm and welcoming culture of the Maasai People. Simply some family time to soak in the beauty and stillness of the wilderness.

Ahh… it all sounds just so wild!

From the beginning, Basecamp has always been a family-oriented company and as such we appreciate the value of bringing a child into the bush; allowing them to experience the natural world and to know from a young age the wonders, spectacles and curiosities of our last wild places.

We help you with the planning and logistics of experiencing an exciting wild family safari by ensuring your experiences are planned and executed as seamlessly as possible. As soon as your plane touches down at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, we pick you up and transfer you to the domestic airport-Wilson Airport. From here your flight from Nairobi to Masai Mara is about 45 minutes which is normally a thrill (for everyone) to spot those first animals scattering off the airstrip as you approach touch down.

You will be mesmerized by the beauty of the wildlife and the natural surroundings and all this is amplified by a warm, welcoming Basecamp hosting culture that celebrates families. We make all guests feel like part of the Basecamp family at our safari camps, and that means long days and nights filled with laughter as much as it does to watch your child’s eyes light up as they witness each one of the multiple incredible moments that make up a game drive; from learning about tracks and signs to showing them the best places to find insects, butterflies, and birds and trying out new things.

Your stays with us are planned around what works for your family which means we have activities for every member of the family. Head out for an action-packed day in the bush where you are surrounded by vast plains filled with lions, cheetahs, the elusive leopard, elephant, buffalo, and so much more, or relish a long lunch watching the nearby wildlife species or head out on a camp walk and learn about our sustainable projects.

Our Young Explorers Club is a favourite amongst many families that stay with us. The club activities are carefully thought out and presented by our skilled Maasai naturalists who share their knowledge in a way that sparks the enthusiasm of even the youngest guests. The Young Explorers Club was created to do more than just keep children occupied while their parents enjoy their safari. Game drives are, of course, wonderful experiences in themselves to be shared with family, but there is so much more for your children to take away from their safari including carrying a strong conservation message at heart.

From learning bush survival skills, shooting bows and arrows, beading lessons with local Maasai ladies, learning to track with the guides, to playing board games and if we have any budding chefs – children are always welcome to get involved in the kitchen, baking cakes and bread! These activities will keep them entertained throughout your stay and you, as the parents, can take some well-deserved timeout; In the evenings, you will treasure nights under the starry sky around the campfire. Learn the constellations together, share stories of the Masai Mara with our Maasai guides, and take in the calls of the lions and hyenas at night. You are right in the heart of the action so there’s no missing out, even by just lazing back.
